I have been hesitant to write about our camping trip to the Grand Canyon last week. We really had an awesome time except when it rained. I don't know why I was surprised by the rain. lol I just was not mentally prepared for it.We got up to the campground on Saturday afternoon and the sky was dark and ominous. We got the tent and tarp over the picnic table just in time. The rain felt wonderful as we ate our chicken noodle soup and I found that I had forgotten a few key items in our menu for the weekend. The girls absolutely loved playing in the forest. They have such great imaginations which ranged from being horses, deer and playing hide and seek. We did not bring any toys and none were missed.
We woke up with the sun...really early on Sunday to a bright sunny day. We ate breakfast and headed over to see the canyon. I always catch my breath at the first sight of it! We were there to watch 2 sets of mules head down the Bright Angel Trail. We then took the red tram and headed to overlook points of the canyon only available on the tram. We walked about 3/4 of a mile between stops. It was so quiet and peaceful. You could hear nothing except the wind...and us. The girls were little troopers and so was I. I took so many pictures...you just can capture something this huge...but I tried. I managed to get a nice sunburn and the girls turned brown.
We caught the tram to the end Hermits Rest and saw some really cute squirrels. The girls loved that part!
We had a really nice lunch at the Maswick Lodge and then headed over to the rim trail and lodges along the rim. It was a nice and leisurly afternoon. The girls got to go to story time with one of the park rangers and Luis and I sat on the grass and relaxed a bit in front of the El Tovar lodge. We headed back to our camp for dinner. It rained a bit that night.
We woke up to another sunny morning on Monday. We went to the visitior center and points availble on the green tram. We saw more people today. It got rainy midway through the morning and afternoon. We ended up taking the girls to an IMAX movie to get away from the downpour. Huge drops of rain. We had a bit of a leek in our tent....but were able to sleep there one more night. Miss A started getting a bit wheezy that night and we were more alarmed at this then the rain. Although, the rain was getting to me. I could only hold out so long with two kids under a tarp! We decided to pack up and head home a day early. It was a good decsion because Miss A really did need her albuterol that night.
In between downpours Luis mainly got everything packed. I tried to keep the girls dry. We were done before 11 and decided to visit the canyon one last time. We got a few souvenirs took a few more pics and headed to dry country.
We did stop at Montezuma's castle Indian Ruins on the way home. Just so inspiring and amazing to see what these people built hundreds of years ago.
We got home around 4:30 and defrosted the sloppy joe's I left in the freezer. lol
We had a great time spent together just the 4 of us. We had several opportunities to help our fellow campers. All in all it was a wonderful grand adventure and the girls are ready to go camping again very soon!
