February Roundup

I have been following a blog by Katie the Scrapbook Lady and she has started doing a round-up of the month to help with her journalling and scrapbooking in the future. I just love the idea and thought I would try to do this starting this month.

Here is a link to her site with a much better explanation:

What books and/or magazines did I read this month?

I read Simple Scrapbooks Mar/April edition and scoped out their website and got several really good digital freebies. I also was inspired to try a new layout in digital format. I have saved the page to refer back...hopefully in March!

My friend Lorry Stringer lent me her book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I finished within a couple of days. The whole premise of the book was the younger sister was designed and chosen to be a genetic match to help her sister survive leukemia. I don't know enough about technology but I don't think we are that advanced yet, but the story is really intense. I enjoyed hearing the story from the girls perspective and getting a glimpse of how teens think.

The girls and I went to the library the end of January and I checked out a couple of books, but really could not get into them. I am feeling the need for some more reading soon. I saw an author who looked very interesting, she writes Christian Fiction with characters who are Amish. I am very interested in reading stories about the Amish. Their peace in life fascinates me. I just don't think I have the work ethic that these people have.

What movies and/or tv shows did I watch this month?

Luis and I took the girls to see Curious George. They were totally engrossed in the movie. They sat and watched the movie very intently the whole 80 minutes. The use of color in this movie is fabulous. They used contemporary colors in ways I had never seen in a kids cartoon before. I really do recommend going to see it or get it as soon as it comes out on DVD.

I have been watching Wife Swap on Monday nights, and been totally engrossed in how other people live. I am learning the grass is not always greener....but it sure is fun to take a peek at others to really appreciate what I have right here in my own home.

This month the Winter Olympics took center stage for TV viewing. I stayed up way to late to watch the Ice Dancing and Women's Figure Skating. It was on tv for 17 days. The event that made me gasp was when Lindsay Jacobellis was leading in snowboarding and then tried to do a show off stunt and fell. She got the silver medal. I loved watching the Ice Dancing, and watched with baited breath as the US skates won the silver medal. I also rooted for Shauni Davis to win in speed skating, along with Apolo Anton Ohno.

What special days did I celebrate and how?

I decorated the house for Valentines Day. We had hearts and cupids up for about two weeks. When the actual day arrived I gave Luis a chocolate frog that said I was "toadally yours." I wanted to take pictures of the girls in their valentines day dresses but the day was overcast and then the following weekend they got sick with colds, and Luis was coming down with an allergy related cold and somehow the month has slipped away.

What illnesses or health concerns did I have in February?

I took Camryn to see Dr. S on the 5th and at that time she looked in her ears and said that she did not have any infection. She gave her an in office hearing test and the typanogram showed that her ear drums were still not moving. So now we wait another month and go back to see her on the 6th of March. I do have a scheduled appointment to see an ENT doc the end of March. I think she might be headed towards getting tubes in her ears. Time will tell, as we have to document everything first before we can go to the ENT. I hate the waiting while I jump through hoops for the insurance company. I hope we can get her hearing back on track because I think she misses out on some things and compensates be being shy or doing her own thing.

On Wed the 7th I took Camryn to the Mesa Public Schools to be tested for Special Ed mainly speech issues. The Speech Pathologist did not hear any major problems at this time with her speech. We can go back for a re-test in June. I am thankful that there are not any bigger problems we have to deal with.

What fun things did I do with my friends and/or family?

Luis and I went to his company's "holiday" party/Casino Night. They served a nice buffet dinner and dessert. There was a cash bar which did not bother us, since we don't usually drink (all the sodas were included with the dinner). We had a great time playing 21. Last year we did well with roullette but this year....21 was our game. We did really well and doubled our starting money. We did not win any prizes though.

What new recipies, food or restaurants did I try?

We went out to eat at Pancho's an all you can eat Mexican Buffet. It is pretty easy to find something for the girls to eat here...quesadillas, rice and refried beans are a winner every time. I ordered a tamale and it brought back all the memories from when I was pregnant with A and C. I craved meat. I ate a ton of Burger King hamburgers and tamales. I still like them both just not in the quantities I wanted them back then....lol!

What special or unusual purchases did I make?

I found a picture for my mantel. It is titled Begonias by Kim Parker. This is a print on canvas and is really beautiful. I can't help but keep looking at it :) I originally saw this artists work on the internet. I ran out really quick without the girlies to get some ink for our printer and popped into Cost Plus world market and they had some of her work on sale. I just could not pass up purchasing it for our house. I found something of beauty that makes me happy and shows a bit of who I am in my home!

What were this month’s disappointments?

I get so discouraged that I cannot get enough done. There alot of things I do half-heartedly and it is really beginning to show that I have been sloppy. Something, in my life has got to give and I think it is going to have to be my "personal" time. The girls need me right now, and I am going to have to not worry about scrapbooking, etc until they are a bit older and can play without being so destructive to property and themselves. (They put pennies down the sink and into the garbage disposal on Tuesday night!)

What were my accomplishments this month?

I hired a professional organizer to come into my house with a fresh pair of eyes and help me get our house back into order. She has come two times now and I can see that we are making progress. This past week I had purged so much stuff we filled our recyle bin and had to ask the neighbors if they would mind if we could put more stuff in theirs!

As the house is getting emptier our sale items in the garage is getting higher. I am going to have a garage sale in March (I hope!)

I have another appointment next month and in the mean time I have homework to accomplish to move some furniture around in our house to see if we can better utilize the rooms and space.
