Ever since I can remember I have had abnormal periods. I never had a normal AF like most people. It really did not bother me in my teens or early 20's. Why would it really, it was very convenient not to have to think about and deal with "Aunt Flo".
I got my first real job with health insurance in May 1991. I went for my regular annual exam and a problem was found. I had abnormal cell growth in my uterus. I had a DnC done late that year. I was put on birthcontrol pills and went happily on my way. I always had my annuals done but nothing further was found.
Luis and I got married in 1999. We wanted to wait a year before starting a family. Like we can really plan these things I later learned. In June 2000 we found that because of my history of abnormal cycles I would probably have a harder time getting pregnant. I spent the rest of that summer taking my temperature every day to see if I actually did ovulate. I took two rounds of Clomid with no ovulation indicated via temping. In September of 2000 I was bleeding quite heavily and quite concerned. I went back to my regular OBGYN asking for more tests and the possiblility of going to a fertility specialist.
In December 2000 I was sent for a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to look at my uterus and see if my tubes were clear. All was well with my tubes but they saw a growth at the base of my uterus. In January 2001 I had a DnC to remove the growth which turned out to be a cancerous polyp (Endometrial adenocarcinoma)
My dear Doctor recommended an immediate hysterectomy. Both Luis and I immediately wanted a 2nd opionion. We were referred to a specialist in Phoenix Dr. Vince Thompson. He was very clinical and said that the best course of action would be a hysterectomy. Luis and I were very adamant to see if there was any other course of action that we could try before major surgery. He reluctantly agreed to have me try a diet and exercise regime to lose weight, and a follow up DnC to take another scraping.
The 2nd Dnc was scheduled for April 2001 and performed by my obgyn. The results were Complex endometrial hyperplasia with atypia….less ominous and worrisome than the results in January.
In June/July 2001 my obgyn transferred my care over to Dr. Thompson. I was so glad to never see that Dr. again! Dr. Thompson put me on Megace which completely shut down my hormones for May-Aug. My face was so clear of acne that summer. It was wonderful. In the mean time I found a new ObGyn recommended by a friend. He was a huge improvement over the other doc.
Dr. Thompson did my 3rd and last DnC of that year. I was cleared by him to go to a reproductive endocrinologist in Sept/Oct of that year. We started see Dr. Mark Johnson. After looking at my previous medical records and new lab reports he diagnosed me with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I started taking Metformin to regulate my blood sugar, but it really did a doozy on my intestinal track. He switched me over to Avandia in November and it agreed with my system.
My first round of Clomid was in January 2002, no ovulation.
My 2nd round of Clomid was in March 2002 150 mg per day. Through ultrasound it appeared that the medicine was working and I had a large nice follicle and egg forming. We decided to have a HCG trigger shot (to make sure I did ovulate) with a IntraUterine Insemination done. The trigger was March 24, and IUI was on March 26 (my mom's birthday!).
Two weeks later on April 9, 2002 I took a pregnancy test and found I was pregnant.
This was a total miracle since had we followed our intial doctors suggestion I would not have had a uterus at all! Luis and I were both so thankful for all of our friends and family who prayed with us and walked with us through this nastiness.
We belive in miracles!
Especially since two weeks later, 2 days after our 3rd anniversay, we had our first ultrasound and found out that we were having twins!
